How to break bad habits

Did you know, we are who we are because of our habits. We first make a habit and then habit makes us. It is important to break bad habits. So, if you do agree with me, this blog is for you.

Honestly, we all have good habits and bad habits. Good habits are those that produce positive results and make us happy. Bad habits are the ones that are holding you back towards your goals and creating failure in some sense.

So, is it easy to break bad habits? No, it is not easy as habits are a long lasted repeated behavior of a person. But I can certainly say it is possible with a simple approach. I have done it and it’s worked miracles for me and thus I will share the secret with you.

Break bad habits

Thus the first step to breaking a bad habit is being AWARE of what are the bad habits you have. Make a list of them and be honest with yourself. I often say, have an acceptance to the list. I had a lot many and thus be ok if you too have a long list.

If you say you don’t have a bad habit, you might be lying. That is a dangerous bad habit to self and to others.

LIST OF BAD HABITS WE ALL WANT TØ BREAK

1. PROCASTINATION

2. OVER EATING / JUNK FOOD EATING

3. ADDICTION – ALCOHOL / SMOKING / DRUGS

4. SLEEPING PATTERN

5. EXCESSIVE THINKING

6. NAIL BITING

7. NEGATIVE THINKING

8. ANGER / SHORT TEMPERED

9. BEING JUDGEMENTAL

10. INDISCIPLINE

These are few examples I have considered after discussing with people. Now let us understand how to break habits with a simple approach.

Most often there is one practice we all do to change our habits but that never seems to work for most. It is because we try to fight the habits of being an opponent. Remember, all these habits are your own creation so being an opponent is going against on your self.

THE WHY

So, the first step is knowing WHY you want to change your habits. Then you should be having a higher purpose that drives you for a change. This is key for everyone.

THE EFFECTS

Most often bad habits result in effects on personal or professional life. Being able to identify the effects are important. This motivates most to ensure they work on changing bad habits. If the effects are critical, you will take action and if they are manageable, then its mostly not going to change.

THE ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER

Remember, breaking bad habit is a journey against your own doing. It requires you to be mentally willing to go through and also I recommend having an accountability partner. This person should be your go to person to find the focus on changing the bad habit and also motivate showing the positives ahead.
